Pas de Roland

Pas de Roland is a natural rock gateway carved by the Nive river, a short drive from Ustaritz on the edge of the neighbouring village of Itxassou, in the French Basque Country (Pyrénées-Atlantiques). A narrow gap cut through the rock forms a scenic passage followed by a riverside footpath, making it one of the most visited natural landmarks in the area.

Where does the name come from?

The name refers to Roland, nephew of Charlemagne, said to have passed through this valley on his way to the battle of Roncevaux. According to legend, he found a massive boulder blocking the way and split it open with his sword, Durandal, creating the passage still visible today. A second version of the tale credits a strike from his horse's hoof instead. Geologists offer a more down-to-earth explanation: the opening most likely formed from a natural rockfall later widened by human hands, though the legend remains the reason many visitors come.
