About this place
Parque Dr. Manuel Braga is a city park in Coimbra, Portugal, set right beside the Mondego River. Locals often call it simply Parque da Cidade, the City Park. It is one of the best-known green spaces in town and a convenient pause while exploring the centre.
Where is the park?
The park lies on Avenida Emídio Navarro, on the bank of the Mondego in central Coimbra (coordinates roughly 40.2051 N, 8.4277 W). The river gives it a distinct character: paths run under trees, with water close by. It is easy to combine a visit with a stroll along the waterfront and a walk through the old town.
How did the park come about?
The story of the land is older than the park itself. It once belonged to Benedictine monks. It sat at the level of the river's course, so it flooded constantly. In 1888 Coimbra City Council bought the island known as Ínsua dos Bentos. It held orange groves and open ground where horse races took place, as well as a football pitch where the Académica club played.
The transformation into a tranquil riverside park was planned in the 1920s by landscape gardener Jacinto de Matos. The park was officially inaugurated on 23 March 1958.
What is there to see?
Among the tree-lined paths stands a bandstand designed by Silva Pinto. The park also holds a series of statues. One of the best known is the bust of Antero de Quental, the Portuguese poet and philosopher (1842–1891), by Diogo de Macedo. For anyone interested in literature and local history, it is a good reason to linger.
Who is it for?
The park works as a calm break from sightseeing: a short walk, a rest in the shade, or a look at the sculptures and the bandstand. It suits families, solo travellers and anyone wanting a breather from the busy lanes of the old town.
