Parque de Gasset

Parque de Gasset is a historic city park in the centre of Ciudad Real, one of the oldest and most cherished green spaces in the provincial capital. Where does the park's name come from?

The land the park now occupies wasn't always known by its current name. It began as the Paseo de Alarcos, a promenade leading toward the historic Sanctuary of Our Lady of Alarcos, one of the region's important pilgrimage sites near Ciudad Real. The park in its present form was formally opened in 1915, on land donated by the Marquis of Treviño. Its name honours Rafael Gasset Chinchilla, a deputy connected to Ciudad Real who brought piped water to the city from a reservoir later named after him — the Gasset Reservoir. In 1933 a monument was erected in the park to commemorate that achievement, and the name stuck.

The park holds the oldest surviving fountain in Ciudad Real — the old Hernán Pérez del Pulgar fountain, relocated here from Plaza del Pilar. At the park's southern edge stands the Cruz de los Casados, a stone cross dating to the 15th century that has been rebuilt several times over the centuries after suffering damage.
