Park-šuma Golubinjak

Park-šuma Golubinjak is a protected forest reserve in Gorski Kotar, right next to the village of Sleme in the Lokve municipality. The park covers 51 hectares of karst terrain at an altitude of 730–800 metres and was designated a protected forest park back in 1954, making it one of the older protected areas in this part of Croatia.

How do you get to Golubinjak?

The forest sits roughly a kilometre from the centre of Lokve, right beside the Rijeka–Zagreb motorway, which makes it an easy stop whether you're coming from the coast or from the capital. The village of Sleme, next to which the park spreads out, lies along the seven-stage, 260-km Gorski Kotar cycling trail, so the area also draws cyclists passing through the region.

What will you see inside the park?

Walking trails wind through a beech-fir-spruce forest growing over karst rock formations. Two distinct plant communities meet here: on the rockier ground a fir forest with reed grass (Calamagrostio-Abietetum) has developed, where spruce is also common, while on soil-richer patches a typical beech-fir forest (Omphalodo-Fagetum) takes over.

The star attraction is "Kraljica šume" — the Queen of the Forest — a massive fir tree more than 250 years old, standing over 35 metres tall with a trunk circumference of 140 cm. It's one of the most impressive single trees anywhere in Gorski Kotar.

The park also hides notable rock formations and caves: Paklena vrata (Hell's Gate), a narrow rocky passage, the Golubinja cave that gave the park its name, and the Ledena (Ice) cave.
