Lokvarka Cave

How was the cave discovered?

Lokvarka was found by chance in 1911 by workers quarrying limestone in the area. Geologist Josip Poljak carried out the first scientific surveys of the underground labyrinth, and in 1961 the site was declared a protected geomorphological natural monument. Speleologists have since mapped more than 1,179 metres of passages, with the system reaching a total depth of around 275 metres — making Lokvarka one of the deepest caves in Croatia open to visitors.
