park Cihelná

Praga, Czechia

About this place

Park Cihelná is a small riverside park in Prague's Malá Strana district, sitting right on the bank of the Vltava next to Charles Bridge. For most of its history the site was a neglected industrial backlot rather than a place to visit, and it only gained new life as a public green space in recent years.

Where does the name come from?

The name Cihelná comes from cihelna, meaning brickyard — a brick factory that once operated on the site. Through the 1800s and into the early 1900s the land served purely practical purposes: it was fenced off and used to store timber from a nearby sawmill, and alongside the brick factory there was also a plant that rendered dead animals. Not the most romantic origin story for a spot with such a striking view of Charles Bridge.

What does the park look like today?

After years of neglect, the site underwent a thorough revitalization. New lawns were laid, cycling and pedestrian paths were added, thirteen new trees were planted along with shrubs and roses, and new benches were installed. A staircase now leads down to the water, and new retaining walls make it possible to safely reach the riverbank itself. It's still a compact space, but one designed to invite people to stop and linger.

What can you see from the park?

The park's biggest draw is the view. From the bank, visitors get an intimate, close-up perspective on Charles Bridge and the flow of the Vltava, without the crowds that gather on the bridge itself. It's also worth watching the river's residents — swans and ducks regularly come close to shore in this stretch of the Vltava.

Where exactly is the park located?

The park sits in the Malá Strana district, on the Prague bank of the Vltava, directly next to Charles Bridge — right in the heart of historic Prague and within easy walking distance of the left bank's main landmarks.

Who is this place for?

Park Cihelná works well as a short break during a walk through Malá Strana — for anyone looking for quiet and a river view away from the crowded bridge, for photographers after a different angle on Charles Bridge, and for locals who simply want to sit by the water for a while.
