Parc de Benicalap

Parc de Benicalap is one of the largest and most popular municipal parks in Valencia, located in the Benicalap district, just north of the city's historic center.

For decades, the land now occupied by the park belonged to the Ministry of Agriculture, which ran a horticultural research station here dedicated to crop experimentation. Before that, like much of the land surrounding Valencia, it formed part of the fertile huerta — the network of orange groves and irrigated fields that has shaped the city's landscape for centuries. Valencia's city council purchased the site in 1975, and the park officially opened in 1983. It covers roughly 80,000 square meters, making it one of the city's larger green spaces.

Benicalap was the first park in Valencia designed and built around modern concepts of technical gardening and contemporary maintenance systems. This approach — blending function with aesthetics — turned it into a model for later green-space projects across the city.
