Parc de Baix a Mar
About this place
Parc de Baix a Mar is a seafront sports and recreation park in Vilanova i la Geltrú, sitting in the Catalan neighborhood of Baix-a-Mar (also known as Barri de Mar), a former fishing quarter that has kept its maritime character close to the town's beaches. The park runs along Rambla Joan Baptista Pirelli, just behind the strip of sand that stretches east of the harbor.
What will you see?
This is an active, open-air space rather than a formal ornamental park. It centers on an earth-surfaced football pitch and a basketball court, both well used by locals and visiting travelers looking to stay active beyond the beach. A dedicated street workout area — a set of bars and calisthenics frames — draws people training outdoors, and it's one of the park's most distinctive features. In recent years the town renovated the park's green areas, installing an irrigation system that reuses up to 60% of the water it draws, making Baix a Mar one of the more water-efficient municipal parks in the area.
The site used to include a dog exercise area as well, but it has since been relocated to Plaça de l'1 d'Octubre — worth keeping in mind if you're planning a walk here with a dog, since the park itself no longer serves that purpose.
How to get there?
The park sits in an easily reachable part of Vilanova i la Geltrú, a short walk from the harbor promenade and the town's main beaches, including the area around Platja de Ribes Roges. Walking or cycling along the seafront promenade is the most convenient option — the town is largely flat and pedestrian-friendly. Travelers arriving from outside the town can start at Vilanova i la Geltrú railway station, roughly a 15–20 minute walk toward the sea from there.
When to visit?
Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons, with mild temperatures well suited to outdoor activity and none of the peak-summer heat of July and August. In summer the park sees heavier foot traffic thanks to its proximity to the beaches, but the cooler evening hours are a good window for a workout or a stroll.
Who is this park for?
Baix a Mar suits active travelers best — runners, calisthenics enthusiasts, and casual football or basketball players. It also works well for families splitting a beach day with a short burst of sport activity in some shade, away from the busier main promenade.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a playground for kids? The park is built mainly around sports infrastructure for teens and adults — pitches and a street workout area — rather than a traditional children's playground, worth factoring in if traveling with young kids.
Can I bring my dog here? The former dog exercise area has been moved to Plaça de l'1 d'Octubre, so Parc de Baix a Mar no longer serves that role the way it once did.
Is entry free? Yes, it's an open public park with no charge for entry or for using the pitches and the street workout area.
Is the park close to the beach? Yes, the Baix-a-Mar neighborhood sits directly on the coast, and the park borders the stretch of beaches east of Vilanova i la Geltrú's harbor.
