About this place
Palácio do Freixo is a Baroque palace in the Campanhã district of Porto, standing on the banks of the Douro River. It has held National Monument status since 1910 and is regarded as a distinctive example of Portuguese Baroque civil architecture. Today it houses a pousada hotel, so visitors can experience more than just the exterior.
Who built Palácio do Freixo and when?
The palace dates from 1742 and was designed by Nicolau Nasoni, the Italian-born architect who shaped so much of Porto's appearance. His buildings are a large part of the image of a city later recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The commission came from Jerónimo de Távora e Noronha, Dean of Porto Cathedral (the Sé). The palace served as a residence, with gardens as part of the estate.
How did the building's fortunes change?
After its heyday, the property passed into other hands. The palace and its gardens were sold to the Harmonia company, which set up a mill on the site. The works were expanded again in the 1950s and 1960s, so industrial structures grew up beside the Baroque core. Even so, the monument's value was recognised early: it was declared a National Monument in 1910.
In the 1990s the palace underwent a major restoration led by Fernando Távora, the well-known Portuguese architect and professor. In 2006 the Pestana Hotel Group bought the palace together with the former factory, and three years later it reopened as the largest pousada in Portugal.
What is there to see?
The complex brings together two historic buildings: an eighteenth-century Baroque palace and a nineteenth-century factory, both restored and adapted for present-day use. The contrast is part of the appeal, with Nasoni's stately architecture standing next to industrial heritage. The riverside setting on the Douro adds to the atmosphere, and the site shows well how history and modern life overlap in Porto.
Where is Palácio do Freixo?
The palace is in Campanhã, in the eastern part of Porto, on the Douro riverbank. Its coordinates are roughly 41.1425 N, 8.5748 W. It pairs well with visits to other sights in the city, especially those linked to Nasoni's work.
