About this place
Palacete da Quinta de São Roque da Lameira is a historic mansion in Porto, today also known as Casa São Roque. It stands on the grounds of the former Quinta da Lameira estate, now a public park, and the house itself operates as a contemporary art centre. It is a rewarding stop for anyone who wants to combine a walk among greenery with a little history and an exhibition.
What is the Palacete da Quinta de São Roque da Lameira?
It is a small palace with eighteenth-century origins, altered in later centuries. Sources date its story to 1759, when the house served as a residence and hunting lodge within Quinta da Lameira. Country estates like this were typical of Porto's wealthy bourgeois and noble families. The building is in Porto, in the Porto District of Portugal.
What is the history of the building?
In the 19th century the property belonged to the family of Maria Virginia de Castro, who in 1888 married António Ramos Pinto, a well-known port wine producer and exporter. From then on the house was linked to the Ramos Pinto name and became known as Casa Ramos Pinto.
Between 1900 and 1911 the owner commissioned architect José Marques da Silva, a leading figure of Portuguese architecture of the era, to remodel and extend the house. The garden was designed by Jacinto de Matos. Together these works gave the residence and its surroundings much of the character visible today.
How did the estate become a public park?
In 1979 the Câmara Municipal do Porto, the city council, bought the whole quinta and house from the last owner, a grandson of Maria Virginia and António. The grounds opened to the public as a garden on 20 July 1979. Today they form the Parque de São Roque, a green space within the city.
What can you see today?
In October 2019 the former residence reopened as Casa São Roque, a contemporary art centre dedicated to exhibitions and cultural events. A visit can therefore combine two things: a stroll along the park paths and the garden, followed by the exhibition rooms of the historic house. The park also hosts events, including themed walks about trees.

Tips for visitors
Allow at least an hour: a short walk in the park plus time in the exhibitions. Look at the architectural details of the house, remodelled in the early 1900s, and at the layout of the garden. The site combines well with other stops in Porto, and for anyone interested in the story of port wine it adds the context of the Ramos Pinto family, one of the notable names in that trade.
