Palacio del Espartero is an 18th-century mansion in the heart of Logroño, capital of La Rioja, now home to the Museum of La Rioja.

What is the history behind this palace?

The building was raised in 1752 in neoclassical style, commissioned by Pedro Ruiz de la Porta, a permanent city councillor of Logroño at the time. After his death the property passed to the Martínez de Sicilia family. The palace owes its lasting fame, however, to General Joaquín Baldomero Fernández-Espartero, one of the most important figures of 19th-century Spanish liberalism. Espartero lived here across three separate periods of his life — 1827-1830, 1848-1854 and 1856-1879 — and the house became a meeting point for leading figures of Spain's liberal political scene. In 1871 King Amadeo I of Savoy stopped here for two days on his way back to Madrid, and as a token of gratitude granted Espartero the title of Prince of Vergara. The building was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1962, and since 1993 it has served the public as the Museum of La Rioja.
