Osojno

Dražeň, Czechia

About this place

Osojno

Osojno is a small but ecologically valuable forest reserve located in the municipality of Dražeň, in the Plzeň-North district of western Czechia. Covering just 3.44 hectares, the protected area packs an unusually diverse mix of tree species into a compact stretch of woodland rarely found elsewhere in the region.

Where is Osojno located?

The reserve lies on the northwestern slopes of Hůrka hill, right above the Osojenský stream, at an elevation between 510 and 560 metres. The stream valley has the character of a Šumava foothill landscape, squeezed between two hills, Citeř (589 m) and Hůrka (575 m), which rise almost a hundred metres above the valley floor. This terrain creates steep, cool and moist slopes that favour the growth of near-natural mixed forest.

What does the reserve protect?

Osojno was granted protected status in 1968 specifically to preserve its original mixed forest character. On the spilite bedrock that underlies the valley, an acidic oak forest and a slope beech forest have developed, made up of pedunculate and sessile oak, common beech, and large-leaved lime, with scattered silver fir and Scots pine appearing among the stands. This mosaic of species packed into a small area makes the reserve a valuable example of natural forest succession in the region, undisturbed by intensive forestry.

Why is it worth visiting?

Osojno appeals to visitors looking for quiet, close contact with an almost untouched forest, away from busy tourist trails. The steep valley slopes and the proximity of the stream create a distinctive microclimate, letting visitors notice how vegetation shifts with slope exposure — from drier, oak-dominated patches to cooler, shadier stretches of beech and lime. It also makes a good starting point for hikes across the surrounding hills of the Plzeň-North district, which offer views over the Osojenský stream valley and neighbouring elevations.

How to get to Osojno?

The reserve sits within the cadastral territory of the Dražeň municipality, south of the Osojno settlement, in the Plzeň-North district of the Plzeň Region. It is managed by the Plzeň Regional Authority. The most convenient approach is from Dražeň, from where local roads and paths lead toward the stream valley.
