About this place
Kozelka is a nature reserve in the Plzeň Region, in the Plzeň-sever district, roughly 2 km north of Nečtiny near the village of Doubravice. It protects the summit area and slopes of the hill of the same name, which reaches 659.6 meters above sea level, spanning elevations between 550 and 660 meters. The protected area covers 33.15 hectares and was declared a nature reserve in 1972.
What makes Kozelka distinctive?
The hill is a table mountain of volcanic origin, and its geology is the main reason the site was placed under protection. Its slopes and summit feature numerous rock towers, pseudokarst hollows, pyramid-like formations, and extensive scree fields. This mix of rock shapes gives the area the feel of a natural maze, with narrow passages winding between the boulders and towers.
Who is Kozelka for?
The reserve has long attracted rock climbers — its walls hold around 200 climbing routes rated 3 to 9 on the UIAA scale, making it one of the recognizable climbing destinations in the Plzeň region. Visitors more interested in gentler outdoor activities can still enjoy sweeping views from the summit over the surrounding hilly landscape. Simply walking among the rock towers and squeezing through the narrow gaps between boulders is an attraction in its own right, whether or not you plan to climb.
How to get to the Kozelka reserve?
A red-marked hiking trail leads to the reserve — about 2.8 km from Nečtiny, or roughly 3.8 km from the village of Meze. Both approaches are walkable and make Kozelka a natural side trip for anyone exploring the Nečtiny area, including the nearby chateau.
