About this place
Orahovačko jezero (Lake Orahovica) is an artificial recreational lake at the foot of the Papuk mountain, in the town of Orahovica in Slavonia. It is the most visited leisure spot in the whole area — during the summer season it draws over 250,000 bathers, even though the lake itself covers only 1.7 hectares.
How was the lake created?
The reservoir was built in 1961, when a dam was constructed on a mountain stream flowing down from Papuk. Although the lake is artificial, it is fed by natural mountain springs, which keeps the water constantly refreshed and clean. The lake stretches 208 metres in length, with a width varying between 48.8 and 85.2 metres, and holds an estimated 65,000 cubic metres of drinking-quality water. On the northern side, the depth reaches up to 9 metres.
What can you do there?
The entire 570-metre shoreline has been fully landscaped for visitors, and swimming is free of charge. Around the water you'll find sports courts, a children's playground, and marked paths for jogging and cycling. Regular microbiological testing of the water consistently rates it "excellent," making Orahovačko jezero one of the cleaner inland bathing spots in the region. Barbecuing in designated green areas near the shore is a popular pastime as well.
What's worth seeing nearby?
Rising above the lake is Ružica grad, the largest preserved medieval fortified town in Slavonia and one of the largest in all of Croatia, protected as a top-category heritage monument. The fortress sits on a ridge 378 metres high and covers an area of roughly 800 square metres. An 800-metre educational trail leads up to the ruins, with steps built into the steeper sections and a spring at the foot of the walls. Along the way, 23 information boards explain the history, architecture and legends surrounding the fortress. The lake also lies within Papuk Nature Park, which offers more than 200 kilometres of marked hiking trails for those who want to explore further.
When should you visit?
The swimming season runs from June through the end of August, when water temperatures are comfortable and all catering and sanitary facilities are fully open. Spring and early autumn are better times for hiking up to Ružica grad and around the Papuk trails — fewer crowds, cooler air, and clearer views from the fortress walls.
