Niva Olšového potoka

Petrovice, Czechia

About this place

Niva Olšového potoka is a small but ecologically significant nature reserve located northeast of the village of Petrovice, in the Ústí nad Labem district, right on the border with Germany. The site forms part of the Labské pískovce Protected Landscape Area and falls under the administration of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park authority. The reserve covers just under 17 hectares and sits at an elevation of 436 to 450 metres above sea level.

What does the reserve protect?

At the heart of the area is the meandering course of the Olšový stream and its floodplain. It is precisely this natural, winding channel and the preserved floodplain and wetland habitats that led to the site being placed under protection. The valley floor is covered with floristically rich meadow vegetation, providing a refuge for numerous specially protected and endangered plant and animal species.

The reserve is considered one of the best-preserved stream courses within the entire Labské pískovce Protected Landscape Area, making it a valuable reference point for researchers studying river ecosystems in this part of the Czech Republic.

A brief history of protection

The site was first placed under legal protection on 4 April 2002, by decision of the Labské pískovce Protected Landscape Area administration. The goal was to safeguard the specially protected and endangered plant and animal species found here. Among the species cited as justification for establishing the reserve are the corncrake (Crex crex), a secretive migratory bird typical of damp meadows; spignel (Meum athamanticum), a plant characteristic of upland and mountain grasslands; and creeping willow (Salix repens), a shrub associated with wetlands and peat-forming terrain.

What does the landscape look like?

The character of the reserve is defined above all by the stream itself. Its naturally meandering course creates a mosaic of microhabitats — oxbow remnants, damp depressions, wet meadows, and strips of riparian vegetation. This diversity of environments supports high biodiversity within a relatively small area. Thanks to extensive, low-intervention land use, the meadows along the stream have retained a rich composition of flowering plant species, which in turn sustains insect and bird populations tied to this type of habitat.

Why is it worth a visit?

Niva Olšového potoka appeals to visitors interested in a quieter, less dramatic side of nature — without the striking rock formations for which the nearby Bohemian Switzerland is famous, but with an authentic, well-preserved river valley ecosystem instead. The site is particularly rewarding for botany and birdwatching enthusiasts, as well as anyone looking for a peaceful walk away from the crowds drawn to the region's better-known attractions.

Its proximity to the German border gives the surrounding area a distinctly borderland character — quiet, sparsely populated terrain where nature has largely been able to develop undisturbed.
