About this place
Libouchecké rybníčky is a small but ecologically significant nature reserve about one kilometer northeast of the village of Libouchec, in the Ústí nad Labem district, sitting at an elevation of 320–330 meters above sea level. The reserve lies within the Labské pískovce Protected Landscape Area and is administered by the Bohemian Switzerland National Park authority. It was established by decree No. 4/96 on 10 October 1996, with its main purpose being the protection of one of the region's most important amphibian breeding sites.
Why is this place so important for amphibians?
A network of small ponds surrounded by wet meadows creates ideal conditions for egg-laying and larval development. This is precisely why Libouchecké rybníčky is considered one of the key amphibian breeding sites within the entire Labské pískovce Protected Landscape Area. Newts, toads, and several frog species can be found in and around the water — for many of them, this is the only safe breeding ground for kilometers around. The site therefore functions as a refuge for rare and endangered organisms, not only amphibians but also the insects and aquatic plants associated with them.
What grows around the ponds?
The vegetation surrounding the water bodies is typical of nutrient-poor wet meadows. It is dominated by soft rush (Juncus inflexus), carnation sedge (Carex panicea), and water knotweed (Persicaria amphibia). This modest but stable set of species reflects the high habitat value of the area — this type of vegetation has retreated in many other parts of the country due to drainage and agricultural intensification, yet here it has survived in good condition.
How has the site changed in recent years?
At the beginning of the 21st century, the reserve's main pond underwent a thorough revitalization. The bottom was desilted, overgrown aquatic vegetation and self-seeded trees that were shading and drying out the banks were removed. As part of the works, new shallow pools were also created specifically for amphibians — additional breeding sites that increased the reserve's habitat capacity and gave the species more room to thrive in subsequent seasons.
Who is this place for?
Libouchecké rybníčky appeals mainly to nature lovers, amphibian watchers, and anyone seeking a quiet, intimate landscape away from crowded trails. Given the reserve's protected status and the sensitivity of the habitat, visitors should stick to marked paths and avoid entering the water directly, especially in spring during the amphibian breeding season. The surrounding area near Libouchec also allows visitors to combine a visit with hikes through the nearby parts of the Labské pískovce Protected Landscape Area.
