Na Černčí

Úštěk, Czechia

About this place

Na Černčí is a small but botanically remarkable nature reserve just south of the town of Úštěk, in the Litoměřice district of northern Bohemia, Czech Republic. Covering only 7.6 hectares, it is considered the richest site for orchids and other protected plant species anywhere on the Úštěk upland. The reserve was declared in 1990 by the former District National Committee in Litoměřice and is now managed by the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic.

What does the reserve look like?

Na Černčí is a compact pine grove standing among open farmland close to Úštěk. This combination of a small woodland patch surrounded by cultivated fields has helped preserve unusually warm, sun-exposed, and calcium-rich soil conditions — exactly the kind of habitat that many demanding orchid species depend on. It is this specific mix of light, soil, and isolation that allowed such a concentrated diversity of plants to survive on such a small plot of land.

Why was the area protected?

The reserve was established primarily to protect the region's richest site of orchid-family plants along with other rare and endangered species. Among the species recorded here are the fly orchid, one of the rarest and most critically endangered orchids in the Czech Republic, together with the lady orchid, the broad-leaved helleborine, and the burnt orchid. Having so many orchid species concentrated within less than eight hectares gives Na Černčí a botanical importance that reaches well beyond the immediate region.

Who should visit?

Na Černčí is best suited to nature lovers, botanists, and photographers interested in seeing rare orchids in their natural setting rather than in a garden or greenhouse. Because the reserve is small and ecologically sensitive, visitors are expected to keep to marked paths so as not to disturb the delicate orchid habitats. The most rewarding time to visit is late spring into early summer, when most of the recorded orchid species are in bloom.

How to combine a visit with the surrounding area

The reserve sits right next to Úštěk, a picturesque small town known for its distinctive historic houses and its setting above the Chmelařská reservoir. A stop at Na Černčí pairs naturally with a walk through Úštěk itself and with exploring the wider Úštěk upland, an area of gentle hills, small villages, and viewpoints over the northern Bohemian countryside.
