Museu Regional de Beja

Beja, Portugal

About this place

Museu Regional de Beja is one of the most important museums in southern Portugal, housed in the former Convent of Conceição in the centre of Beja, in the Alentejo region. It is also known as the Queen Dona Leonor Museum (Museu Rainha D. Leonor). Its collections span two thousand years of regional history, from Roman finds to sacred and decorative art.

Why visit this museum?

The building itself is part of the attraction. The Royal Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição was founded in the second half of the 15th century by the Infantes Fernando and Brites, parents of Queen Leonor and King Manuel I. Thanks to royal protection, it became one of the richest and most sumptuous convents in the kingdom. A visit lets you see late medieval monastic architecture alongside the exhibits, including the cloister and chapels.

How did the museum begin?

The museum was created by a decree of December 1917. It ordered the institution to be installed in the former convent and to receive, as its initial holdings, the assets of the city's defunct episcopal mitre and the art and archaeological collections of the municipal archaeological museum. After the building was adapted and the collections organised, the museum opened to the public on 5 October 1927.

What can you see here?

The collection is varied and considered one of the most significant in the country. Main sections include:

  • painting – works by Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch masters,
  • archaeology – mainly the Roman period, which is especially rich in this region, plus Visigothic, Arab and medieval finds,
  • lapidary collection – carved stone elements and inscriptions,
  • goldsmithing and silverwork,
  • azulejo tiles, sculpture, utilitarian ceramics, numismatics, metrology and ironwork.

The Visigothic collection draws particular attention and is regarded as one of the finest in Portugal.

Who is it for?

The museum suits lovers of history, archaeology and sacred art, and anyone who wants to understand how Roman, Visigothic, Muslim and Christian eras layered on top of each other in the Alentejo. A visit usually takes one to two hours.
