Museu Alberto Gordillo - Joalharia Contemporânea

Moura, Portugal

About this place

Museu Alberto Gordillo – Joalharia Contemporânea is a contemporary jewellery museum in Moura, in Portugal's Alentejo region. It opened in 2011 and is described as the first venue in the country devoted entirely to the art of jewellery. It is named after Alberto Gordillo, a jeweller and sculptor born in Moura.

What is this museum?

It is a small, specialised gallery that treats jewellery as a fully fledged art form rather than an accessory. The collection holds 226 pieces, some of which Gordillo made himself and donated to the town. Around 50 objects are on permanent display, so a visit is relaxed and does not take long.

Who was Alberto Gordillo?

Gordillo is an award-winning artist and, in the view of many, a pioneer of modern Portuguese jewellery. He took part in numerous solo and group exhibitions, where he also showed his sculptural side. His work therefore combines goldsmith craft with a feeling for three-dimensional form.

Where is the museum?

The museum occupies a former fire station that operated on the site until the mid-1980s. The building stands outside the walls of Moura castle, so it is easy to combine with a walk through the old town and the fortress. The address is Rua da Vista Alegre, 7860-143 Moura.

When can you visit?

According to the regional tourism information, the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:30 to 12:30 and from 14:30 to 17:30. A midday break is common for smaller venues in Alentejo, so plan to arrive in the morning or after 14:30. Check the current hours on the Moura municipality website before you travel.

Who is it for?

The museum suits anyone interested in design, decorative arts and contemporary Portuguese art. It also makes a good stop on an Alentejo route if you want something different from castles, churches and wineries. The municipality of Moura also offers a virtual tour of the museum.
