About this place
Museu Professor Joaquim Vermelho is the municipal museum of Estremoz, in Portugal's Alentejo region. It occupies a historic building on Largo Dom Dinis and shows how daily life, crafts and art developed in this part of the country. It is a good first stop for anyone who wants to understand local identity before exploring further.
What is this place?
Its official name is Museu Municipal de Estremoz Professor Joaquim Vermelho. The institution traces its beginnings to 1880, and its collections kept growing over the following decades. It received its present name on 8 March 2003, and on 18 May 2010 it joined the Portuguese Museum Network (Rede Portuguesa de Museus).
What does the building look like?
The building has an oblong floor plan, a two-sloped roof and six balconies across the façade. It was probably built in the 13th or 14th century and was extensively remodelled in the 16th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The architecture alone is a small lesson in the town's history.
What can you see inside?
The collections are varied. You will find religious art, furniture, faience and a set of clay figurines from Estremoz that came from the former Industrial School. Separate sections cover 18th- and 19th-century ceramics, clay pottery and earthenware, and objects made of cork, animal horn and wood. A highlight is the replica of a traditional Alentejo house, which helps you picture how homes in the region once looked inside.
Can you watch the figurines being made?
Yes. In one of the museum's courtyards there is a workshop where two local potters make the traditional clay figures of Estremoz, known as "bonecos de Estremoz". Watching the craftspeople at work is one of the most memorable parts of a visit.
