About this place
Museu Militar de Elvas is a military museum in Elvas, a fortified town in Portugal's Alentejo region, close to the Spanish border. It occupies a former barracks known as the Quartéis do Casarão and shows what life was like for the Portuguese soldier over the centuries: army medicine, horses and harness, and military vehicles.
Where is the museum and what is its history?
The buildings grew out of the 13th-century Convent of São Domingos. After religious orders were dissolved in 1834, the convent part was taken over by the army and became the barracks of Infantry Regiment No. 8 (Regimento de Infantaria N.º 8). It served that role until the Portuguese Army was reorganised in 2006, which freed the site. It was converted into a museum and officially opened on 29 October 2009.
What can you see inside?
The Portuguese Army's collection in Elvas totals roughly 640 pieces, arranged around three themes:
- Health service – equipment and items tied to military medicine,
- Vehicles – both tactical and armoured,
- Horse-drawn transport and harness – historic carriages, wagons and riding gear.
At opening, the museum offered a reception area with a shop, five rooms devoted to military harness, five rooms for the army's health service collection and one room for horse-drawn vehicles. Later displays also cover the war in the former Portuguese overseas territories (1961–1974).
Why visit?
The museum does not focus only on weapons and battles. It reveals the logistics behind an army: how the wounded were treated, how units moved and how draught animals were looked after. It is a good complement to sightseeing in Elvas, a town famed for its vast fortifications. The complex is among the largest museum sites in Portugal, and the museum belongs to the Portuguese Museum Network.
