Museu Municipal Doutora Berta Cabral

Vila Flor, Portugal

About this place

Museu Municipal Doutora Berta Cabral is the municipal museum of Vila Flor, a town in the Bragança district of northern Portugal. It occupies a medieval building on Largo Dr. Alexandre de Matos, close to the parish church known as the Matriz. Its collections hold roughly three thousand objects that tell the story of the town and the surrounding countryside.

How did the museum begin?

The museum was founded in September 1957 by Raúl de Sá Correia, a long-serving secretary of the town council. He also directed it until his death in 1993. In May 1958 the collection moved into the former Domus Municipalis, the town's old council house. The building was converted into a cultural centre that originally also housed the Belmiro de Matos library. The work was paid for with state support and a donation from Eduardo Dário da Costa Cabral.

What is the building?

The house was once the Solar dos Aguilares, the seat of the family that first held Vila Flor as a grant. It later served as the Paços do Concelho, the town hall. Over the years it also hosted the municipal butcher, the tax office, a guard post and the town library. The main facade carries the royal arms and the fleur-de-lis, the emblem of Vila Flor. On the west facade you can see the Aguilares arms, which show two eagles.

What is in the collection?

Most pieces were donated by locals and friends of the town, and the great majority come from the municipality itself. The collection covers:

  • paintings, including works by Manuel António de Moura,
  • archaeology,
  • ethnography,
  • African crafts,
  • sacred art,
  • numismatics and medals.

Together they let you follow the region's story from archaeological finds to rural traditions and religious art.

Who is it for?

The museum makes an easy stop on a walk through central Vila Flor, and it pairs well with a visit to the nearby Matriz church. It suits travellers who want local history rather than headline monuments. A visit does not take long, and an hour is usually enough.
