About this place
Casa de Miguel Torga is the family home of one of Portugal's most important twentieth-century writers, turned into a memorial museum in São Martinho de Anta, in the municipality of Sabrosa in northern Portugal. It opened on 17 January 2022, marking 27 years since the author's death.
Who was Miguel Torga?
Miguel Torga was the pen name of Adolfo Correia da Rocha, a physician, poet, novelist and playwright. He was born on 12 August 1907 in São Martinho de Anta and died on 17 January 1995 in Coimbra. He combined medical practice with writing for most of his life, and his native village in the north of the country returns again and again in his stories and diary entries. For many Portuguese readers he is the voice of that rugged, mountainous region and its people.
What is there to see?
The building dates from 1950. It is a small single-storey house with a hall, kitchen and bathroom, a living room and three bedrooms, surrounded by a garden and orchard. Torga and his family spent Christmas, Easter and summer holidays here, and it is where he wrote many of his poems, short stories and diary pages. The visit is not about a monumental exhibition. It is about meeting the writer's everyday surroundings: a modest interior where the memory of his life in his home region has been preserved.
How did the house become a museum?
The property was donated by the writer's daughter, Clara Crabbé Rocha, to the Regional Directorate of Culture of the North (DRCN). It was restored and adapted as a museum space, and it is managed by Sabrosa Town Council, complementing the neighbouring Espaço Torga.
Espaço Torga next door
Nearby stands Espaço Torga, a contemporary cultural facility designed by Eduardo Souto de Moura. The two sites work well together: the house shows the intimate, family side of the writer's life, while the modern architecture of Espaço Torga frames his work and legacy. The contrast between a modest village house and a contemporary building is part of the appeal.
