Museu Municipal do Bombarral

Bombarral, Portugal

About this place

Museu Municipal do Bombarral occupies the Palácio Gorjão on Praça do Município, right at the heart of Bombarral. Originally a 16th-century noble residence, the building was later turned into the town's municipal museum, pairing the region's history with the architectural legacy of the palace itself.

What is the history behind the building?

The palace was originally built for the Cunha family, and its ornate, emblazoned portal still hints at the wealth of its first owners. In the 17th century, following a court ruling, ownership passed to the Gorjão Henriques da Cunha Coimbra family — a lineage tied to Francisco Gorjão Henriques da Cunha Coimbra Botado e Serra, who lived from 1641 to 1710. Much of the building's present character dates from this period, and further alterations in the following century added still more detail to its layout. The Gorjão family kept the palace until the 20th century, when it passed into the hands of the Bombarral municipality. Given its historical and architectural value, the building was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1996.

What can visitors see inside the museum?

The collection is organized into several distinct areas. The oldest holdings form an archaeological collection, largely dating from prehistoric times — evidence of settlement in the area long before the palace itself was built. Alongside it, ethnographic collections document the region's traditional customs and craftsmanship.

The museum also dedicates space to local cultural figures. One section is devoted to writer Júlio César Machado, while works by artist Jorge de Almeida Monteiro are also on display. Visitors can additionally see historical archives dating back to the early 19th century, as well as sculptures by Vasco da Conceição and Maria Barreira, including examples of medal-making and figurative sculpture worked in stone, wood and metal.

How has the site changed in recent years?

The palace underwent an extensive refurbishment worth 2.5 million euros. The works covered both the structure of the Palácio Gorjão and the modernization of the exhibition content and museography, aiming to make the space more accessible, interactive and inclusive for different groups of visitors. As a result, the historic interiors now come with a contemporary museographic setup, without losing their original character.
