About this place
Museu do Neo-Realismo is a museum in Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal, devoted to Neo-Realism, the literary and artistic current that tied creative work to social engagement in the twentieth century. It suits visitors interested in literature, the history of ideas and Portuguese culture, and it is also a notable example of contemporary museum architecture.
What is Neo-Realism, and why is there a museum for it here?
Neo-Realism was a movement that drew attention, in Portuguese literature, visual art and essays, to the lives of ordinary people, labour and social inequality. Vila Franca de Xira is a town linked to that milieu. In the 1980s a group of intellectuals connected with the movement began preparing the ground for an institution, setting up an Installation Committee and a promoting association (APMNR). In 1993 the museum's Documentation Centre opened to the public, the first visible result of those efforts.
The building
The new museum building was opened on 20 October 2007 by the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira. It was designed by architect Alcino Soutinho. The building offers more than 1,000 m² of space for temporary exhibitions, both long-running and short. Besides the galleries you will find a thematic library, an audio-visual room, an auditorium for about 100 people, a cafe and a bookshop. A visit therefore does not have to end with the exhibitions: you can also sit down with a book or a coffee.
What can you see?
The museum has built up a varied heritage. Its collections include:
- literary and publishing estates,
- documentary archives, both printed and audio-visual,
- iconographic collections,
- artworks,
- private libraries and a specialised library on Neo-Realism.
The programme features temporary exhibitions with active curatorship, international conferences and travelling shows, which have been presented in places such as Portimão and Rio de Janeiro. Because the offer changes over time, check the current programme on the museum's website before you go.
Who is it for?
You will get the most from a visit if you care about Portuguese literature, twentieth-century history or socially engaged art. Newcomers to the subject will find a good starting point, while researchers can draw on the library and archive resources.
