Monte Gioco

Monte Gioco is a mountain in the Bergamasque Alps (Orobie) rising to 1,366 metres, sitting on the boundary between the municipalities of Serina, Dossena and San Pellegrino Terme. Its position between Val Brembana and Val Serina makes it one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the Bergamo highlands.

What to see at the summit

The summit of Monte Gioco forms a grassy pyramid. Its privileged location between two valleys translates into a full 360-degree panorama. On clear days you can pick out the main Orobie peaks — Menna (2,300 m), Arera (2,512 m), Grem (2,049 m) and Alben (2,020 m) — as well as the nearer ridges of Cancervo and Vaccareggio. An iron cross marks the top. Views extend as far as the Bergamo plain and the Pre-Alps on good days.

How to get there

The most popular approach starts from Lepreno, a small hamlet within the municipality of Serina. The well-marked trail climbs through meadows and woodland in wide zigzags, gaining 530 metres in about 1 hour 30 minutes. Those wanting a longer outing can complete a loop that also takes in Monte Zucchin: the full circuit covers 9.5 km and takes around 3 hours 45 minutes.

A second route comes from the San Pellegrino Terme side. Follow the Val Brembana road to the Dossena junction, then head towards Spettino (858 m). From there a steep forest path climbs to Baita la Forcella (1,073 m), after which the trail follows the main ridge to the summit.

When to visit

The hiking season runs from May to October. Spring and early summer bring lush greenery and clear air after the rains. July and August are the busiest months, with dry and fully accessible trails. September and October are favoured by experienced hikers for the sharp autumn visibility and quieter paths. Winter ascents are possible but the final ridge section requires appropriate equipment and extra caution.

The trail from Lepreno is rated easy to moderate. The first section through forest and open meadows suits walkers of average fitness. The final ridge section is noticeably steeper and demands careful footing. Families with young children should factor in extra time and assess the group's fitness before setting out.
