Monastery of São Martinho de Tibães

Mire de Tibães, Portugal

About this place

Monastery of São Martinho de Tibães – the former Benedictine capital of Portugal

The Monastery of São Martinho de Tibães (Mosteiro de São Martinho de Tibães) stands in the parish of Mire de Tibães, right next to Braga in northern Portugal. For centuries it was the mother house of the Benedictine order in Portugal and Brazil. Today it is best known for the exuberant Rococo interior of its church, and it ranks among the notable heritage sites around Braga.

How did the monastery begin?

The Benedictine foundation dates to the end of the 11th century. In 1110, Count Henry and Countess Teresa, the parents of Afonso Henriques, who would become the first king of Portugal, granted the community a charter. It gained privileges and power until the 14th century.

Why was Tibães so important?

After the Council of Trent, in 1567, it was chosen as the seat of the Congregation of São Bento of the Kingdoms of Portugal. From then on the monastery served as the governing centre of the order in Portugal and Brazil, which is why it is called the order's mother house.

What can you see there?

The monastery reached its peak in the 17th and 18th centuries, when it grew into one of the largest monastic complexes of Portuguese Baroque. The church was built between 1628 and 1661 in the Mannerist style, with Manuel Álvares and João Turriano involved in the work. Inside, lavish Rococo decoration is the main draw for visitors.

What happened in the 19th century?

In the 1830s, when religious orders were dissolved in Portugal, the monastery was closed and its contents were inventoried and sold. Some of the buildings passed into private hands. The Portuguese state acquired the estate in 1986 and has been restoring it gradually.

Getting there and planning a visit

The monastery lies close to Braga (coordinates 41.5558 N, 8.4794 W), so it works well as a half-day trip from the city. Check current opening hours and ticket prices before you go on the Património Cultural ticketing site.
