About this place

Lepavina Monastery

Lepavina Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery in northern Croatia, in the village of Lepavina near Sokolovac, not far from Koprivnica. It belongs to the Metropolitanate of Zagreb and Ljubljana of the Serbian Orthodox Church and is one of only two active monasteries in that eparchy. It suits travellers who enjoy quiet, little-known sacred sites away from the usual tourist trail.

Where is Lepavina Monastery?

The monastery lies in a peaceful rural area north of Zagreb, close to the Hungarian border. Its coordinates are roughly 46.10° N, 16.67° E. The complex consists of a Baroque church and residential buildings, and it functions as a closed religious community. There is no typical tourist infrastructure around it, so the visit pairs well with a stop in nearby Koprivnica.

How did the monastery begin?

The origins go back to around 1550 and are linked to a monk from Hilandar, the Serbian monastery on Mount Athos. Only a few years later, in 1557, Ottoman Turks destroyed the foundation. It was rebuilt in 1598, and the site has continued as a centre of monastic life ever since.

Why did Lepavina matter?

Its importance grew when the nearby Marča monastery passed into Greek Catholic hands. Lepavina then became the main Orthodox centre in northern Croatia. For a time it was also the seat of the bishops of Lepavina and Severin, which makes it a significant point on the map of Orthodox Serb history in the region.

What to see

  • The Baroque church, the central element of the monastic complex.
  • A 16th-century icon of the Mother of God, venerated by pilgrims.
  • The quiet surroundings, a rural landscape that invites a pause for reflection.

Practical tips

This is a working monastery, so visitors are expected to show respect to the monks and worshippers. Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees), keep quiet, and ask permission before taking photos inside. Check visiting arrangements in advance, because the monastery is not a conventional attraction with fixed ticketing. Driving is the most convenient way to get there, and Koprivnica makes a sensible base.
