Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Varaždin
About this place
The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Varaždin is the main church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Varaždin in northern Croatia, and one of the most significant baroque religious buildings in this part of the country. It stands on Pavlinska Street, a short walk from the town's main square, so it fits naturally into a stroll through the historic centre.
What is the history of the cathedral?
The church was built by the Jesuits in the middle of the 17th century, with work starting in 1642. It became an important centre of religious life in the town. The Drašković noble family were the Jesuits' main patrons in Varaždin and supported both the order and the building of the church.
After the Jesuit order was suppressed, the Pauline order took over the church. Its fortunes then took a turn: in 1788 it was secularised and used for a time as a military storehouse. It was returned to worship in 1797. It gained cathedral status in 1997, when Pope John Paul II established the Diocese of Varaždin and the existing church became its seat.
What does the cathedral look like?
The cathedral is an example of early baroque architecture. It has a single nave with side chapels, giving the interior a clear, orderly layout. The façade is articulated like a triumphal arch, with columns, a gable and niches holding sculpture.
Inside, the eye is drawn to the main altar, richly decorated with carved work and gilding, and featuring a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the subject to which the whole church is dedicated. The baroque decoration is striking without overwhelming the space.
Are concerts held in the cathedral?
Yes. The church is known for its good acoustics and hosts concerts, especially during the Varaždin Baroque Evenings (Varaždinske barokne večeri) festival. It is one of Croatia's most important music festivals, and early music sounds especially fitting here, surrounded by architecture of the same era.
How do I get to the cathedral?
The cathedral is right in the centre of Varaždin, close to the main square. The town is small and compact, so most sights, including the old castle, the town hall and streets lined with baroque townhouses, are best explored on foot. Follow Pavlinska Street to find the church.
