Mlynaruv kamen

Mlynářův kámen is a basalt rock lookout rising above the village of Dolní Zálezly in northern Bohemia, part of the volcanic landscape known as the Bohemian Central Uplands (České středohoří). It's not the most famous viewpoint in the region, but it rewards the short climb with one of the best views of the Elbe river bend around.

Where exactly is it?

The rock sits on the slope of Dubický kopec hill, which reaches 358 metres above sea level. Dolní Zálezly itself lies on the left bank of the Elbe (Labe) river, about 7 km south of Ústí nad Labem, one of the larger cities in the region. That makes the lookout an easy add-on if you're already exploring the Ústí nad Labem area rather than a destination requiring a special trip.

What will you see at the top?

The main draw is the view of a striking meander of the Elbe river, curving visibly beneath the rock. On a clear day, the panorama extends over the eastern part of the Bohemian Central Uplands, a landscape of rounded volcanic hills typical of the region.

It was erected as a memorial to the victims of World War I, and a plaque with a German poem sits at its base - a trace of the German-speaking population that once lived in this area. The rock's history goes back much further, though: in prehistoric times it served as a signalling point, a so-called "hláska", used to pass signals such as fire or smoke between nearby settlements.

The easiest starting point is the village of Dubičky, which has a car park. From there, a green-marked trail leads to the summit, covering roughly 1 kilometre. It's a short walk, but pay attention near the top, as the path runs close to the rock edge.
