Mechnáčky

Květná, Czechia

About this place

Mechnáčky is a small but ecologically valuable nature monument in the southern part of the White Carpathians, roughly 1 km west of the village of Květná, within the municipality of Strání. The protected area covers just under 9.7 hectares at elevations between 425 and 508 meters, sitting on the left slope of the Svinárský stream valley. It forms part of the larger White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area.

What does the landscape look like?

Mechnáčky occupies a broad, intricately shaped ravine where flower-rich White Carpathian meadows alternate with wetlands and spots of groundwater seepage. Drier sections are dominated by grass and herb communities built around furrowed fescue and mountain sedge, while the damper hollows support plants adapted to consistently moist ground. Scattered trees and shrubs punctuate parts of the terrain, adding to the habitat mosaic.

The underlying geology consists of calcareous silty claystones belonging to the White Carpathian flysch formation, on top of which pseudogleys have developed from quaternary slope sediments. Historical landslides have left visible traces in the slope's relief.

Why is this site protected?

The reserve owes its protected status chiefly to an exceptional diversity of orchids, including lady's-slipper orchids and the rare burnt orchid (Orchis ustulata). This richness of meadow flora, characteristic of the traditionally, extensively managed grasslands of the White Carpathians, was the principal reason the area was placed under protection.

The site is equally significant for invertebrate fauna. Surveys have recorded 39 spider species and 35 species of aquatic beetles, alongside a notable butterfly population that includes the rare two-tailed pasha. Mechnáčky therefore serves as an important refuge for rare and endangered invertebrates, particularly insects, which have fewer and fewer suitable habitats left in the surrounding intensively farmed landscape.

History of protection

The reserve was first established in 1982 by regional ordinance and its protected status was reaffirmed in 1991. It carries the international IUCN Category IV designation, reserved for areas managed specifically for habitat and species conservation. Mechnáčky is part of the broader network of protected sites within the White Carpathians, where the priority is preserving traditional, species-rich meadows together with their mosaic of wetlands and dry grasslands.
