About this place
The Marian column in Mnichovo Hradiště is a Baroque monument standing in front of the town hall on Masaryk Square, set inside a small park right beside the main road through town. It may not carry the fame of its Prague namesake, but for Mnichovo Hradiště itself it counts among the oldest and most valuable pieces of small-scale sacred architecture — listed as a Czech cultural monument since 1958.
What the column looks like and what it depicts
The monument is carved from sandstone in a classic Baroque arrangement: a six-sided base carries a triangular prism-shaped shaft, topped by a capital shaped like a three-sided pyramid. At the very top stands a life-size statue of the Immaculate Mary, posed in the contrapposto stance typical of Baroque sculpture, with a gently curved silhouette and weight shifted onto one leg. The shaft carries a cartouche bearing the coat of arms of the Waldstein family, the local castle's owners, along with an inscription describing Mary as a comforter of the suffering.
Who built the column and when
The exact date of construction and the sculptor's identity are not firmly established. One theory links the column's founding to the tenure of the local dean Jan Julius Rucký, roughly 1684–1706. Another attributes the work to sculptor Martin Jelínek the Elder, while a third points to Martin Ignác Jelínek, born in 1728, which would place the column's origin in the second half of the 18th century. Without conclusive documentation, art historians still treat the precise timeline as an open question.
Why the statue on top isn't the original
What visitors see on the column today is not the original carving. During the 1980s, the original statue was removed and replaced with a copy to protect it from further weathering. The original figure of Mary is now kept safe in the lapidarium of the local castle, accessible as part of a castle tour.
What restoration work the column has undergone
The column has been repaired and conserved several times. The top statue was first restored back in 1971. The column as a whole underwent thorough restoration in 2002 and again in 2010, the latter carried out by conservator Josef Vitvar. The most recent restoration took place in 2017, led by Martin Pokorný. These repeated interventions have kept both the replica statue and the column's stone body in good condition despite decades of outdoor exposure.
Where exactly to find the column
The column stands on Masaryk Square in Mnichovo Hradiště, in the Mladá Boleslav district, inside a small green space in front of the town hall, on its western (rear) side facing the road. The spot sits right in the town centre, within easy walking distance of Mnichovo Hradiště Castle and the rest of the historic town core.
