Church of Saint James

Mnichovo Hradiště, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint James the Greater is a Baroque parish church in Mnichovo Hradiště, a small town in northern Bohemia, standing roughly 100 metres from the main square, T.G. Masaryka Square. The building sits on a rise above the valley of the Nedbalka stream, so its tower is visible from a distance and works as one of the town's landmarks.

What's the story behind this church?

The Baroque building you see today is not the first church on this spot. An earlier Gothic parish church stood here, dating back to the founding of the town itself, but it eventually proved too small or too worn for the growing parish and was replaced. The new church was commissioned by Countess Marie Markéta Valdštejnová, née Černínová of Chudenice, a member by marriage of the Waldstein family that shaped much of Mnichovo Hradiště's history, including its chateau. Construction is dated to 1726–1727, a date confirmed by a chronogram inscribed above the main portal. No architect is documented by name with certainty, but the design is attributed to M. Raimondi, a builder associated with the Waldstein family's construction projects. The church is now listed as a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

What will you see inside and outside?

The layout is straightforward and typical of small-town Baroque parish churches: a rectangular, single-nave body, a rectangular presbytery, and a west tower topped with a distinctive onion-shaped dome. A small sacristy is attached to the north side of the presbytery. Inside, two decorative periods meet — the main altar and the pulpit are Baroque, while the side altar is later and lighter in style, executed in Rococo. Spotting this contrast is a good way to read the building's history as you walk through it: older furnishings versus a later, more ornamental addition.

How do you get there?

Mnichovo Hradiště lies in the Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj) region, close to Mladá Boleslav, so it pairs naturally with a day trip around that part of the Czech Republic. The church stands right in the town centre, within walking distance of the main square, so no car or local transport is needed once you've reached the town — just walk from the centre. It's worth combining the visit with the nearby chateau, since its history is closely tied to the same Waldstein family that funded the church.

When is the best time to visit?

Because the church is an active parish building, it's worth checking local opening hours before a visit — many small-town and village churches in Czechia only open their interiors at set times or around services. The exterior and surroundings, however, can be viewed year-round, and the onion-domed tower against the Nedbalka valley photographs particularly well in the afternoon light.
