Luka Chateau

Luka Chateau is a small, partly derelict manor house in the village of Luka, part of the Verušičky municipality in the Karlovy Vary district, on the southern edge of the Doupov Mountains in western Bohemia.

When was the chateau at Luka first built?

The village is first recorded in writing in 1239, when the estate belonged to a nobleman named Václav z Luk. At that time a modest early-Gothic fortified house stood on the site, the kind of small stronghold typical of minor Bohemian nobility. The building's present, much larger form came together gradually, through several rounds of rebuilding spread across the following centuries.

How did the building change over time?

In the 16th century, under the Steinbach family, the old fortress was expanded in Renaissance style into a three-wing complex arranged around a courtyard. Around 1660, Wolfgang Libštejnský z Kolovrat carried out another major rebuild, giving the residence its early-Baroque appearance. The chateau only reached its current four-wing layout, closed around a square inner courtyard, in the 19th century, when the missing western wing was finally added. The two-storey building enclosing the courtyard on all four sides is the structure still standing today.

Who owned the chateau over the centuries?

Besides the Steinbachs and the Libštejnský z Kolovrat family, the estate later passed to the Nostic family, who held it from the late 18th century onward. In the early 20th century the building served the local Jewish community as an orphanage and recreational facility, and in 1919 the municipality took it over and turned it into a school — the last time the chateau was put to regular, organised use.

Why is the chateau in such poor condition today?

After 1945 the building began to decline, and the lack of ongoing maintenance led to serious damage. A leaking roof let water in for years, eventually causing most of the ceilings on the first and second floors to collapse. Since 30 November 1994 the chateau has been listed as a protected cultural monument (registration number 12811/4-4971), a status that opened the door to conservation work, though the building remains closed to the public and is still undergoing restoration in stages.

The village of Luka sits in a quiet, rural corner of the Doupov Mountains foothills, roughly seven kilometres east of Bochov and seven kilometres north of Žlutice, at an elevation of 600 to 620 metres. Since the chateau itself is closed and under repair, the realistic option is to view it from outside, from the village road, and pair a brief stop here with a longer trip through the wider Karlovy Vary region — toward the spa town of Karlovy Vary itself, or to nearby Žlutice with its historic town centre.
