About this place
Longos Vales Monastery in Monção
Longos Vales Monastery (Mosteiro de Longos Vales) is a former monastery with a church in the village of Longos Vales, in the municipality of Monção, Viana do Castelo District, northern Portugal. It sits at 42.0511 N, 8.4445 W, a short distance from the Spanish border, and counts among the oldest Romanesque monuments of the Alto Minho region.
Who founded Longos Vales Monastery?
Tradition credits Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, with its foundation, dated by tradition to 1140. Historians place it more broadly in the second half of the 12th century. The community belonged to the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine, an order that enjoyed royal backing in the young kingdom.
What role did it play in the Middle Ages?
In 1197 King Sancho I granted the monastery couto status, a protected territory with special privileges and limited interference from secular authorities. The stated reason was the merit of its prior, Pedro Pires, who had paid for the tower and fortress of the town of Melgaço. The monastery was therefore more than a religious centre: it also mattered to the defence and settlement of a frontier region.
What happened after the medieval period?
The monastery declined from the 14th century onward. In 1551 Pope Julius III, by papal bull, handed it over together with its dependencies and revenues to the Jesuits of Coimbra, an arrangement pushed by Cardinal Henry, later King of Portugal. In the 17th century the Jesuits sponsored a thorough reform of the complex. As a result, most of the surviving buildings reflect that period rather than the medieval original.
What is there to see?
The only element of the original medieval construction that survives is the main chapel, distinctly Romanesque in style, and it is the most valuable part of the complex. The rest of the church and monastery is the product of remodelling under the Society of Jesus. The contrast between the austere Romanesque chapel and the later additions shows how the site changed over several centuries.
The ensemble was classified as a National Monument (Monumento Nacional) in 1926.
