Lo Castellot

Lo Castellot is a medieval castle ruin standing above Artesa de Segre, a small town in the Catalan province of Lleida. The hill it occupies, known as Castellot, sits just east of the town center and has long served as a lookout over the Segre river valley.

What will you see on site?

The hilltop preserves a round tower dating to the 10th century, built during the Andalusian settlement (hisn) that predated the Christian conquest of the area. It stands roughly 2.87 m tall and 5.17 m in diameter, with walls up to 0.70 m thick. Its original north-facing entrance, closed by a slightly depressed semicircular arch, is still visible. Below the tower, two sectors of feudal-era construction remain: on the southeast side, a rectangular chamber with irregularly extended arms and a trapezoidal tower; on the southwest side, wall fragments and a water cistern. A 1972 monument to the Sacred Heart was later built on the summit, and its construction partly damaged the upper fortifications, while decades of terracing for farming on the northern and western slopes have also eroded parts of the walls.

How do you get there?

Artesa de Segre lies on the C-1313 road linking Lleida and Puigcerdà, about 22 km from Balaguer. To reach the castle ruins, take the street leading to the town's municipal reservoirs and continue uphill along a paved track to the summit, where the Sacred Heart monument stands.

What is the history behind it?

The site was settled before the Christian conquest as an Andalusian stronghold (hisn). Between 1010 and 1017 it was taken by Ramon Borrell, Count of Barcelona and guardian of Count Ermengol II of Urgell, confirming the area's passage into Christian hands. The fortress is recorded in a feudal pact from 1024, and was definitively recaptured in 1037 by Ermengol II himself. The following year, in 1038, it was purchased as allodial property by Arnau Mir de Tost and his wife Arsenda. In 1313, King Alfonso III authorized ten Jewish families to settle there. From 1362 to 1504 the castle was held by the Ribelles family, after which it passed under the lordship of the Montserrat abbey.
