Castell de Tudela

Castell de Tudela stands above the small village of Tudela de Segre, part of the municipality of Artesa de Segre in the Noguera region of Catalonia. Perched on the left slope above the Senill river valley at roughly 449 metres of altitude, the castle is protected as a Cultural Property of National Interest (BCIN).

What will you see there?

The building you see today is a Baroque-era manor house, raised on top of — and partly incorporating — an older medieval fortress, so the site layers two very different architectural moments. From the original defensive works, the old entrance gate to the fortified village survives, set into a square tower with buttresses that is believed to date from the 14th century. The village itself was once enclosed by walls, a common feature of frontier settlements in this part of the Segre valley during the period of feudal consolidation.

What's the history behind it?

Tudela first appears in the historical record in 1092, when a woman named Ermessenda left an ounce of gold in her will to the church of Sant Pere de Tudela de Segre — proof that the settlement, along with its own religious infrastructure, already existed by the late 11th century. At that time the castle formed part of the extensive domains of the Viscounts of Àger, one of the most powerful feudal lineages in this corner of Catalonia.

Ownership shifted more than once over the following centuries. By 1193 the castle was held in allodium — free of any feudal overlord — by Guerau Alemany de Cervelló. Just eleven years later, in 1204, jurisdictional lordship had passed to the Viscount of Cabrera, illustrating how quickly control over these strategically placed strongholds along the Senill could change hands.
