Lipovka

Dolní Žandov, Czechia

About this place

Lipovka is a small but ecologically significant nature reserve located in the municipality of Dolní Žandov, in the Cheb District of the Karlovy Vary Region in the Czech Republic. The protected area was established on 10 November 1995 to safeguard a rare meadow habitat and the orchid species that grow within it.

Where is Lipovka located?

The reserve sits on a hill rising to roughly 671 metres above sea level, right next to the village of Dolní Žandov. It's a quiet, rural corner of western Bohemia, not far from the German border and within reach of the famous West Bohemian spa towns such as Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně, and Františkovy Lázně. Interestingly, the administrative territory of Dolní Žandov itself contains two nature reserves — besides Lipovka, there is also Mechové údolí — a sign of the area's surprisingly rich natural diversity for such a small municipality.

What is being protected here?

The reserve was designated primarily to protect a mesophilic meadow with thermophilic (heat-loving) vegetation. The hillside supports several orchid species, most notably the lesser butterfly-orchid (Platanthera bifolia) and the fragrant orchid (Gymnadenia conopsea). Both belong to the native orchid flora of Central Europe and have become increasingly rare as traditionally managed, unfertilized meadows — the habitat they depend on — have disappeared across the region.

The hill's orientation and specific soil conditions allow this warmth-loving vegetation to persist here, even though the surrounding region is generally associated with a cooler, upland climate. As a result, Lipovka functions as something of a botanical refuge within an otherwise agricultural and forested landscape.

Who is this place for?

Lipovka appeals to nature lovers, botany enthusiasts, and nature photographers, especially during the flowering season of its orchids, typically late spring to early summer. Because it holds official nature reserve status, visitors should stick to marked paths and avoid picking any plants — the basic etiquette for responsible visits to protected areas like this one.

It also makes a worthwhile stop for travelers exploring the West Bohemian spa region who want to experience local nature away from the more well-trodden tourist routes.
