Broumovská bučina

Broumov, Czechia

About this place

Broumovská bučina is a small but ecologically valuable forest nature reserve located about a kilometer west of the village of Broumov, in the northern part of the Tachov district, within the Český les (Bohemian Forest) Protected Landscape Area. It protects well-preserved patches of forest growing on steep, rocky slopes descending toward the Hamerský potok stream valley.

What is the reserve protecting?

The main purpose of the reserve is to preserve natural forest communities growing on difficult-to-access, stony slopes. The dominant habitats here are so-called slope and scree forests with a significant share of maple, alongside nutrient-rich beech forests hosting a diverse understory typical of fertile, moist Central European woodland. The mix of rocky, sun-exposed sections and shaded, damp stretches creates a mosaic of microhabitats, so a relatively small area supports plants and animals typical of both drier slopes and moist stream valleys.

Part of the reserve is covered by artificially planted spruce stands, a remnant of forestry practices that predate the area's protected status. According to the management plan, these stands are gradually being converted into communities closer to the natural vegetation of the site — that is, beech and slope forests. Because heavy game pressure interferes with natural beech regeneration, the entire reserve has been fenced off, allowing young trees to grow without constant browsing damage.

A place with a history

The surroundings of Broumovská bučina also carry a history tied to the region's forestry industry. Charcoal burners once worked here, producing wood charcoal in the characteristic mound kilns of the era. By the mid-19th century, charcoal production consumed as much as half of the annual timber harvest in this area — a reminder of how central these forests once were to the local economy, long before nature conservation became the priority.

Why visit?

Broumovská bučina suits visitors looking for quiet and a genuine connection with nature away from crowds — it isn't a mass-tourism attraction, but rather a compact, high-value stretch of forest. The steep, rocky slopes above the Hamerský potok valley offer a chance to observe a striking variety of terrain and vegetation within a short walk. It's also a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in the region's forestry history, since traces of the old charcoal-burning activity can still be found on site.
