Kosatcová louka

Trstěnice, Czechia

About this place

Kosatcová louka is a small nature reserve located about 2 km east of the village of Trstěnice, in the southernmost part of the Cheb district, within the Tachovská brázda valley in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic. The area was placed under protection in 1990, and its name — literally "Iris Meadow" — points directly to the reason it was set aside.

Why is this meadow protected?

The reserve covers a patch of peat meadow that has preserved one of the region's more substantial populations of Siberian iris (Iris sibirica), a species highly threatened in the wild. The plant typically blooms in late May and into June, covering the meadow with its distinctive blue-violet flowers. Alongside the iris, the meadow's undergrowth supports other rare and protected species: bogbean (a plant typical of peat bogs and waterlogged meadows), the May fringed orchid (an orchid species), and mountain arnica, valued both botanically and in traditional herbal medicine.

What should you know before visiting?

Kosatcová louka is a small-scale site, designed primarily to protect a fragile habitat rather than to host mass tourism. The peaty ground tends to be damp and soft, especially in spring and after rainfall, so appropriate footwear is worth packing. Because of its nature reserve status, picking plants and stepping off the marked paths is prohibited — a rule that helps keep the delicate peatland vegetation from being trampled.

The best time to visit is during the Siberian iris flowering season in late spring, when the meadow is at its most striking, with blue-violet blooms standing out against the green of the wet grassland. Outside the flowering period, the reserve has a quieter, more understated character and mainly draws botany enthusiasts and nature observers.

How to get there?

The reserve lies near the village of Trstěnice in the Cheb district, in a border region close to Germany and not far from the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory). It suits travelers planning a route through the quieter, less crowded corners of western Bohemia who want to pair sightseeing with a close encounter with local nature, away from the crowds found at the region's better-known attractions.
