Hamelika (observation tower)

Hamelika (observation tower)

Mariańskie Łaźnie, Czechia

About this place

Hamelika is a stone lookout tower rising above Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad) in western Bohemia, standing on the hill of the same name at an altitude of 723 metres above sea level. It's one of the recognizable landmarks of a town famous for its spa architecture and colonnades.

Where does the name come from?

The tower's name comes from the German pronunciation of the hill's earlier designation "Homolka." Old maps also list the structure under the name Vyhlídka císaře Františka Josefa I. (Emperor Francis Joseph I Viewpoint) — a nod to the Austro-Hungarian monarch of the era when Mariánské Lázně was thriving as a spa town visited by European aristocracy.

What does the tower look like?

Hamelika was designed as a romantic, artificial ruin of a fictional castle — a style very popular in 19th-century park and lookout architecture. The structure stands 20 metres tall and gives the impression of being supported by two stone "arms" projecting from its main body. The tower was designed by builder Friedrich Zickler and completed in 1876, making it more than 140 years old and still serving visitors as a viewpoint ever since.

What will you see from the top?

Reaching the upper viewing platform requires climbing 120 steps inside the tower. The effort is rewarded with a panorama that takes in the spa quarter of Mariánské Lázně spread across the valley, the ridge of the Slavkovský Forest, and the Zelená hora hill. It's one of the best vantage points from which to take in the town's layout together with the surrounding hills.

How do you get to Hamelika?

The tower is freely accessible year-round, with no admission fee. The most convenient walking route starts at the upper station of the Skiareál Mariánky cable car, from where the tower is about 1.5 km away. The path doesn't require special fitness and suits families with children as well as anyone planning a relaxed walk through the surrounding forest.

Who is this attraction for?

Hamelika appeals both to architecture and history enthusiasts — thanks to its unusual "castle ruin" form and its origins in the Austro-Hungarian era — and to travellers simply looking for a good viewpoint over the town without a lengthy mountain climb. It's a popular destination for spa guests staying in Mariánské Lázně as well as for visitors exploring the wider Karlovy Vary Region during a longer stay in western Bohemia.
