Lipe

Grad Kutjevo, Croatia

About this place

Lipe is a peak in the Krndija mountain range, rising above the town of Grad Kutjevo in Slavonia, eastern Croatia. It stands at roughly 760 metres above sea level and is one of the more popular stops on the hiking and cycling routes that start out from Kutjevo.

Where is Lipe located?

Kutjevo sits in the so-called Golden Valley of Požega, at the southern foot of the Krndija mountains and the neighbouring Papuk range to the west. Lipe rises directly above the town, along the road leading further into Papuk Nature Park. Other Krndija peaks lie nearby too — Petrov vrh (around 700 m) and the range's highest point, Kapovac (792 m). Krndija itself is a low, densely forested mountain range crossed by the road connecting Kutjevo with Orahovica, which climbs over the Međa pass between Kapovac and Petrov vrh.

How do you get to Lipe?

The easiest approach is on foot or by bike straight from the centre of Kutjevo. A well-known loop trail climbs gradually from town toward Papuk Nature Park, up to a point just below the Lipe summit. From there the route turns back toward the rest of the Krndija range and descends to Kutjevo, closing the circuit. The trail draws both hikers and mountain bikers alike — no special preparation is required, though sturdy trekking or hiking shoes are worth packing, since the forest track can turn stony in places.

What will you see along the way?

Most of the route to Lipe runs through the dense, deciduous forest typical of the whole Krndija range, so the tree cover keeps the walk pleasant even on warmer days. From the slopes and near the summit, views open up over the Požega Basin, a fertile valley known for its vineyards and orchards that looks especially striking in the early morning or at dusk. Krndija was once an island in the ancient Pannonian Sea, which explains its gentle, rounded landforms today — a contrast to the higher, sharper terrain of neighbouring Papuk.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn are the best seasons for a hike or bike ride toward Lipe, with mild temperatures and a forest that turns especially colourful — the golden autumn over the Požega Basin is a particular highlight. In summer, an early start is recommended to make the most of the forest shade along the way. In winter the trail can turn muddy or icy, calling for extra caution, though the frost-covered Krndija woods still draw more experienced hikers.
