Lagoa de Caque

Lagoa de Caque is a protected wetland reserve in the municipality of Castro de Rei, in the province of Lugo, in the Terra Chá region of Galicia. Located in the parish of Ribeiras de Lea, roughly 20 km from the city of Lugo, it is the largest wetland in the entire Terra Chá — a name that literally means "flat land," describing the terrain that shaped this lagoon.

How did this lagoon form?

Terra Chá is an unusually flat region with very little drop in elevation. Rivers here move slowly, and water easily spreads across the low-lying, poorly drained ground. These geological and topographic conditions gave rise to Lagoa de Caque, a natural basin covering close to 19 hectares. Locally the site is also known as Lagoa de Bardancos.

You can drive on a paved road to a point roughly 200 meters from the lagoon, after which the way continues on foot or along a dirt track.
