About this place
A Marronda is an extensive, well-preserved forest in the municipality of Baleira, in the province of Lugo, bordering the neighbouring municipality of Fonsagrada. Located roughly thirty kilometres from the city of Lugo, the site sits at altitudes between 500 and 700 metres and covers more than 600 hectares of deciduous woodland protected within the Natura 2000 network as a Special Area of Conservation (ZEC) and a Site of Community Importance (LIC).
What makes this forest special?
A Marronda is one of the most representative surviving examples of native Galician forest, kept in an exceptional state of conservation. Deciduous species dominate the landscape, and the true highlight is the presence of one of the most valuable beech (Fagus sylvatica) forests in Galicia. Here, beech trees reach their westernmost point in the region, making this forest one of the reference sites marking the south-western limit of the species' range in Europe. Alongside the beeches grow oaks and holly, forming a varied, multi-layered woodland structure.
Why visit A Marronda?
Nature lovers will find far more here than a simple walk among the trees. Six habitats of community interest have been inventoried within the forest, and its boundaries shelter numerous plant and animal species protected under the EU Habitats Directive — three protected plant species and as many as 35 protected animal species have been recorded here. The forest provides shelter and food for small reptiles and amphibians, birds of prey, and mammals, making it a significant part of the network of protected areas in north-western Spain.
What does the landscape look like?
The terrain is hilly, with a moderate elevation range between 500 and 700 metres that favours the microclimates beech trees and other moisture-loving, cooler-climate species need to thrive. A dense canopy, undergrowth rich in ferns and mosses, and streams running through the woodland give this place the feel of a largely untouched, primeval forest — a rare sight in this part of Spain.
