Kurozeb

Kurozeb is a rocky ridge and peak in the central section of the Velebit mountain range, rising directly above the coastal village of Cesarica in Croatia. Reaching an elevation of roughly 1168 metres, it is one of the most distinctive viewpoints along this stretch of the Podgorje coast.

Where is Kurozeb located?

The peak sits above Cesarica, a village about 6 km from Karlobag and 54 km from Senj. The ridge itself stretches for about 1.5 km in a northwest–southeast direction, flanked by two smaller, unnamed summits at either end. Its approximate coordinates are 44.6047, 15.0272.

How do you get to the summit?

The most common way to reach Kurozeb is on foot, via the circular route known as Podgorske staze (the Podgor Trails), which starts and ends in Cesarica. The full loop covers about 24.8 km and takes roughly 9 to 10 hours to complete, with Kurozeb marking its highest point. Along the way, the trail passes the Skorpovac mountain shelter, the area of Radlovac, and a small chapel dedicated to St. Roch before descending back toward the coast. Hikers who prefer a shorter outing can approach the summit directly from Cesarica on a steeper, more direct path — a good level of fitness and sturdy hiking boots are recommended, since much of the terrain is rocky and exposed.

What will you see from the top?

The ridge offers one of the widest panoramas in the central Velebit range. From the summit you can see numerous neighbouring peaks, the coastal Podgorje settlements of Prizna and Cesarica, and, on clear days, the islands of Pag, Rab and Lošinj. Visibility permitting, even the well-known Zrće beach on Pag is visible across the channel. Strong, gusty winds — the bura typical of the Velebit massif — are a year-round feature of this ridge, so wind-resistant clothing is essential regardless of season.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the best times for hiking Kurozeb, offering moderate temperatures and generally good visibility. In summer, the exposed, shadeless rock sections can get uncomfortably hot, so an early morning start is advisable. In winter, the trail can be icy and the strong winds may make the ascent difficult or unsafe, so this season is best reserved for experienced, well-equipped hikers.
