Krásná Stráň

Karlík, Czechia

About this place

Krásná stráň is a nature reserve in the Prague-West district, situated between the villages of Karlík and Vonoklasy within the Český kras Protected Landscape Area. It covers 21.41 hectares, with elevations ranging from 215 to 347 metres above sea level. The site received protected status as a natural monument on 16 June 2003 and is managed by the Český kras Protected Landscape Area administration.

What makes Krásná stráň special?

The name translates roughly to "beautiful slope," and it reflects the site's defining feature: a south-facing hillside whose exposure creates a microclimate close to Mediterranean conditions by Czech standards. This unusual warmth supports steppe and forest-steppe vegetation that is rare elsewhere in Central Europe. The geological base consists of Ordovician-Devonian rock, including the královodvorské formation of grey-green slate along with sandstone and mudstone deposits of the Kosov type.

Flora and fauna

The reserve's acidic soils favour warmth-loving oak forest dominated by sessile oak and hornbeam. Among the notable plant species growing on its dry, sun-exposed slopes are the burning bush (Dictamnus albus) and the Bologna bellflower (Campanula bononiensis). The reserve is also home to the critically endangered green lizard (Lacerta viridis), the largest lizard species found in Bohemia, growing up to 30 cm in length. Butterfly diversity is notable as well, including Pyrausta castalis, which reaches the northern limit of its range here.

Viewpoints and visiting

Krásná stráň is known for two scenic viewpoints overlooking the valley toward Mořina and Karlštejn, with views that take in the characteristic limestone landscape of the Bohemian Karst (Český kras). The exposed, sun-facing slope also serves informally as a paragliding launch site. The reserve is reached via marked hiking trails — yellow and blue routes — accessible from both Karlík and Vonoklasy. The walk from Karlík to the viewpoint takes about 15 minutes. Entry is free and the site is open year-round.
