About this place
St. Nicholas Church is a Gothic parish church standing at the heart of Znojmo, a historic town in South Moravia. Its tower and roofline have shaped the town's skyline for centuries, and it remains one of the most significant religious landmarks in the region.
How to get there?
The church sits right in the center of Znojmo, next to the main square and within easy reach of Znojmo Castle, so the simplest way to visit is on foot from anywhere in the old town — it's only a few minutes' walk. Znojmo itself lies in southeastern Czechia, close to the Austrian border, which makes the church a natural stop on day trips that combine the old town, the castle, and Znojmo's famous underground cellar network beneath the historic center.
What will you see?
The church's current form is a late-Gothic, three-nave hall built in stages from 1338 through the first half of the 16th century. Before that, a Romanesque church with a tower stood on the same site, dating back to the early 12th century — parts of its remains were incorporated into the new Gothic building after a fire in 1335 destroyed much of the earlier structure.
Inside, the layout consists of three naves flanked by side chapels: two on the north side, completed in 1419, and two on the south side, added somewhat later, still within the 15th century. This hall-church arrangement is a characteristic example of late-Gothic sacred architecture in the region.
In the chancel, look out for the Gothic frescoes depicting scenes from the Passion, along with a Gothic sculpture of Christ at the column being scourged — one of the most recognizable pieces in the interior. From a later period comes a Baroque pulpit dated 1760, made by J. Winterhalder, carved in the striking shape of a globe, as well as an impressive neo-Gothic organ in the choir loft.
When to visit?
The interior is best appreciated during the day, when natural light brings out the detail in the Gothic frescoes and chancel sculpture. Znojmo draws the most visitors in spring and summer, when the weather also invites walks through the old town and visits to the nearby underground passages, but the church itself, as an active parish, is open to visitors year-round. It pairs naturally with a visit to Znojmo Castle and the main square, both just steps away.
