Archangel Michael's Church

Archangel Michael's Church

Znojmo, Czechia

About this place

Archangel Michael's Church stands on the highest point of the old town in Znojmo, right next to the former Znojmo Castle. It ranks among the city's oldest and most significant religious buildings — the second most important church in Znojmo after St. Nicholas Church.

How old is the church really?

The earliest written mention of the church dates back to 1226, but the building itself is older still: the original structure was most likely erected in the 12th century to serve settlers moving into the area around Znojmo Castle. Its position on the town's highest elevation is no coincidence — historians suggest the site may have previously hosted a pre-Christian place of worship, with the new church effectively taking over both the location and its symbolic weight.

How has the building changed over the centuries?

Little remains visible of the original Romanesque structure after centuries of rebuilding. A major late Gothic reconstruction was completed in 1508, giving the church a form much closer to what stands today. The 16th century brought turbulence: the church came under the administration of Lutheran preachers, and in 1581 its tower collapsed for the first time.

The next turning point came in 1624, when the ruined building was taken over by the Jesuits, who rebuilt it and gave it the Baroque character it retains today. Misfortune struck the tower again in 1642, when it collapsed a second time — and this time it was not rebuilt as part of the church itself. Instead, starting in 1694, a freestanding bell tower (a campanile) was erected nearby, with construction continuing in stages until the mid-19th century.

What can visitors expect today?

The church now functions as a filial church of the Holy Cross parish in Znojmo and remains an active Roman Catholic place of worship. It has been listed as a protected cultural monument in the Czech Republic since 1973, underlining its historical and architectural value. Its blend of Gothic and Baroque elements, combined with its position beside Znojmo Castle, makes it a natural stop on any walk through the town's historic center, close to other landmarks on Znojmo's castle hill.

How do you get there?

The church sits within Znojmo's historic core, directly adjacent to the castle grounds, making it easy to combine with a walk through the oldest part of town. Because of its elevated position, it's worth approaching on foot from the main square or the castle side — the walk also rewards visitors with views over the Dyje river valley below.

Frequently asked questions

Is Archangel Michael's Church the oldest church in Znojmo? Not the oldest, but one of the oldest and most important — it ranks second in significance after St. Nicholas Church, with roots going back to the 12th century.

Why does the bell tower stand apart from the main church building? Because the original tower collapsed twice, in 1581 and 1642. After the second collapse, it was no longer rebuilt as part of the church, and from 1694 a separate bell tower was constructed instead.

Who rebuilt the church after it was damaged? The Jesuits took over the ruined building in 1624 and rebuilt it, giving the church the Baroque appearance it has today.

Is the church still in use? Yes, it currently serves as a filial church of the Holy Cross parish in Znojmo and has been protected as a cultural monument since 1973.
