Kilátópont

Kilátópont sits on the slope of Szent György-hegy above Raposka, a small village in the Balaton-felvidék (Balaton Uplands) region of Hungary. The viewpoint rests at roughly 408 metres above sea level, only a short walk below the mountain's main summit at 414 metres, and forms part of a trail network that winds through vineyards, a former quarry, and the "Basalt Organs" nature trail.

Where is Kilátópont located?

The viewpoint lies on the western flank of Szent György-hegy, directly above Raposka, a village of around 270 residents at the foot of the extinct volcano. Vineyards and holiday cottages climb the slopes above the village, while the 1888 Szent Mihály church anchors the small settlement below. A marked trail leads up from the former quarry on the edge of Raposka, the same starting point for a nearly 4-kilometre nature trail with seven information stops covering the mountain's volcanic geology and history.

What can you see from the viewpoint?

Kilátópont opens onto a wide panorama over the Balaton basin, neighbouring volcanic hills including Badacsony, and the vineyard-covered slopes of Szent György-hegy itself. The most distinctive feature along the approach is the basalt "organ pipes" — tall, hexagonal columns of rock formed as lava cooled and contracted, visible right along the path to the viewpoint. A few additional vantage points sit near the basalt columns, including one called Kőkapu, reached via a red-marked side trail.

How do you get to Kilátópont?

The easiest starting point is the former quarry yard in Raposka, which is easy to reach from nearby Tapolca. From there, a marked trail climbs the slope, passing the nature trail stations, the small Lengyel chapel, and the Kaán Károly mountain hut before reaching the viewpoint and, shortly after, the summit. No special equipment is required, but sturdy hiking shoes are worth packing — the basalt sections of the path can be uneven underfoot.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable hiking temperatures and the clearest air, which means better long-distance views from the top. In summer, an early start helps you avoid the heat on the trail's exposed, sun-facing stretches. The viewpoint is also a popular sunset destination — the view over Lake Balaton and the surrounding hills in late-afternoon light is one of the most photographed scenes in the area.
