About this place
Festetics Lookout Tower stands on top of the 231-metre Varsás Hill in the northern part of Gyenesdiás, a small town on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. Its name honours the Festetics family, whose estates once shaped this part of the Keszthely region.
What can you see from the tower?
The four-level wooden structure is the southernmost of the several lookout towers scattered across the hills above Gyenesdiás. From its top deck, visitors get a wide panorama of the western bay of Lake Balaton, the town of Keszthely below, and the wooded ridges of the Keszthely Mountains stretching behind it. On a clear day the view reaches across much of the lake's western end, making the short climb well worth the effort.
How do you get to Festetics Lookout Tower?
The easiest way is to drive to the Nagy-mező meadow, from where a short, roughly 200-metre trail marked with a blue triangle leads directly to the tower. Because the walk is so brief, the lookout is accessible to almost anyone, without needing to plan a full day's hike — a quick detour is enough to take in one of the better views of Balaton from this side of the lake.
Hikers looking for a longer route can also use the tower as a natural waypoint on the network of trails running through the hills above Gyenesdiás, connecting to other nearby viewpoints.
History and renovations
The tower has been rebuilt more than once. A major reconstruction took place in 2000, and a further thorough renovation was completed in April 2022. Since then, visitors can again fully enjoy the restored structure and take in the view from a reinforced, updated platform.
When is the best time to visit?
The tower is open all year round and admission is free. Spring and autumn tend to offer the clearest air and the best visibility, while the surrounding forest looks especially good in fresh spring green or autumn colour. In summer, an early morning or late afternoon visit avoids the midday heat on the short approach and rewards visitors with warmer, golden light over the lake.
Thanks to its short distance from the Nagy-mező parking area, Festetics Lookout Tower works equally well as a brief stop on a longer drive around Balaton or as a relaxed walk suitable for children and older visitors alike.
